Robert Langstaff: Biophilia is humankind's innate biological connec- tion with the natural world, explaining why certain natu- ral occurrences captivate us. When applied to the built environment, biophilia also defines aspects of nature that most impact and advance occupants' health, fitness and well-being. Bio- philic design establishes a new framework for satisfying the need to experience na- ture in the built environment. Which products have been inspired by biophilic design? RL: At Metroflor, we are applying many biophilic design principles to extend our vision and capability within our luxury vinyl tile (LVT) flooring. Our new Aspecta One Ornamental collection was a logical step in our design development process at Metroflor, be- cause it builds on reclaimed materials that capture the essence of heritage with innovative, nature-inspired design motifs. How do you integrate the philosophy of biophilic design with sustainability? Rochelle Routman: We believe that biophilia is the nexus of sustainability and design. Natural patterns, processes, shapes and forms; all these elements of biophilia are derived from sustainable thought and have a positive effect on our mental and physical state. What impact does biophilic design have upon the restaurant/ hospitality industry? RR: Biophilic design is not just about making some- thing beautiful, it's about providing something that will connect the interior with the individuals who will use it. People are increasingly living healthier lifestyles: eating well, exercising regularly, and investing in spiritual and mental well- being. When they go to a restaurant they carry these same wants and needs with them. A restaurant meal should be enjoyed in a nur- turing environment. Rather than a hard-surfaced, sound reflecting, angular and in- dustrial space, a biophilical- ly-influenced environment with natural forms, softer lighting, and beautiful views helps us relax and have a better dining experience. What are the business implications of biophilic design to restaurateurs? RR: Research indicates that biophilically designed spaces improve mental engagement, concentra- tion, memory and positively impact creativity. When you consider how much busi- ness is done over meals in restaurants, the influence of biophilic design has huge implications. If guests can have a more attentive and focused conversation while conducting business, the benefits of biophilic design become tangible. How can Metroflor's LVT flooring support the role of biophilic design in the choice of flooring? RR: Light, space, layout, color, texture: these all impact us in nanoseconds as do auditory and olfactory effects. The floor becomes the platform for any interior space. The fact that LVT can so effectively repli- cate natural materials makes it one of the most versatile, af- fordable yet low-maintenance materials that can be used to incorporate biophilic design.
