As the so-called shell elements of every interior space, these basic surfaces help tell a brand's story and create desired ambiance through the materials, colors, textures and patterns selected to cover them. While simple paint and traditional wallpaper may serve as starting points for design decisions, wallcovering options today include a diverse array of less conventional materials. Walls clad in re- claimed wood and stone, textured metals, custom laser-cut fnishes, graphic tiles and even green, living walls covered in fresh, healthy plants represent just a few of the on-trend approaches designers and operators use to differentiate interiors. Ceilings, increasingly considered the "ffth wall" with as much potential to im- pact overall design and ambiance as walls, are having their moment as well. Often an underutilized design feature, ceilings can create an integrated aesthetic and serve as the setting for one-of-a-kind decorative fourishes. From a practical standpoint, ceilings can also dramatically infuence a restaurant's noise level. As in other materials categories, decisions on wallcovering and ceiling materials increasingly hinge not just on aesthetic and functional considerations but also on sustainability.
