Publisher's Letter 4 • r e s t a u r a n t d e v e l o p m e n t + d e s i g n • J A N U A R Y / F E B R U A R Y 2 0 1 7 Buckle Up! I t's a brand new year and, with the tumult of 2016 behind us, at Zoomba Group we're looking forward to exploring new horizons and see- ing what the future has in store. We're also looking to enrich the experiences of our readers. In 2016, many of us were introduced to a new term: "fake news." While what we do here at rd+d is not of the breaking news variety, it is content delivered in an era of information overload. Our aim is to cut through the noise and provide you with meaningful industry knowledge in a manner that is easy to consume and helpful to you as you per- form your job related to building great restaurant facilities. To that end, we're debuting two big things this issue. First up, the in- augural rd+d awards (page 34) honors restaurant design professionals doing great work in a variety of segments. It was a year of planning and poring over every detail on our end. But, once we reviewed the entries, we realized that our efforts paled when compared to the incredible work and beautiful results that the winners in our six categories put into their projects. Congrats to all of them and thank you so much for your submissions. Secondly, we're launching the three-part Beverage Bonanza series. In this issue Senior Contributing Edi- tor Dana Tanyeri provides a deep dive into the coffee and tea segment with case studies, interviews and market research. We'll be featuring bar design and smoothie-driven concepts in later issues. This is something of a crossover event within Zoomba Group, as rd+d's sister publication, Foodservice Equipment & Supplies, is doing a year- long Beverage Bonanza segment as well. Looking ahead, you can find our team at The NAFEM Show in Orlando in February at booth #1061. Stop by, pick up copies of our publications and check out our free photo booth where you can put yourself on the cover of rd+d! Planning is also underway for our second annual Tour the Design Trends. Last year, we spent the day on a trol- ley taking readers to four distinct new restaurant venues in Chicago, sampling food and drinks along the way. Check out for photos and details. If you're interested in attending in 2017, email our market- ing and events manager Kevin Poch at Thank you for your support of rd+d. We wish you a bright new year ahead. All the best, MAUREEN SLOCUM President and Publisher
